God’s Love is Whole Part 3-3 (Spirit)
Psalm 139:13-15, Zechariah 12:1

In the last few weeks, we learned how God’s love is whole. This means that his love encompasses our bodies, our emotions, and our spirit. We have already learned about how God loves our bodies and emotions, and last Sunday, PD focused on the final facet of our being – our spirit.
Oftentimes, we work hard to take care of our body and emotions. This can look like physical exercise, getting plenty of rest, seeking a therapist, and more. However, we often neglect to take care of our spirit. This makes sense because our bodies are visible to us, and our emotions are something we can feel clearly, yet our spirit is much harder for us to understand. So, before we understand how to take care of our spirit, we need to learn what our spirit is.
We can turn to Genesis, Ecclesiastes, and Ezekiel to learn about our spirit. In Genesis 2:7, it says that God formed us out of dust and breathed into us our spirit (Ruach). In other words, God created our bodies and emotions, and then he breathed our spirit into us so that we become spiritual beings (Nephesh). This is how we know that God created us with a spirit.
Adding to that, Ecclesiastes reveals 2 things about the spirit. First, we cannot fully understand how our spirit was formed, nor where it resides in our body. (Ecclesiastes 11:5). Secondly, our spirit will go upwards to its eternal home while our body returns to the Earth from which it was formed (Ecclesiastes 3:21, 12:1-8).
Lastly, Ezekiel 37:9 teaches that without the Spirit, we may be physically alive, yet there will be a deep emptiness within us that nothing in the world can properly satisfy. This is why it is so important for us to take care of our spirit, so that we can experience the fullness of life that comes from God.
So, now that we have learned about the spirit and why it is so important, how can we take care of it?
Ecclesiastes 12 reveals that we take care of our spirit by remembering God who created us and living in reverence and obedience to him. This is how we the Old Testament teaches us to take care of our spirit. However, the New Testament builds further upon this idea. Matthew 10:26-33 calls us to acknowledge Jesus Christ and stand by his side. By doing so, we nurture and strengthen our spirit, enabling us to feel more strongly God’s presence and will. So let us take care of our spirit, like we would our body and emotions, by acknowledging our Lord and savior Jesus Christ and remaining faithful to him in all circumstances.
