A Sermon Series on 1 Corinthians: Glorify God in Your Body (Part 6)

1 Corinthians 6:1-20

1 Corinthians Chapter 6 is divided into 3 parts
Part 1: Verses 1-8: How to resolve problems with one another?
Seek mediation from church leaders: when there are problems between HC members, church members, or husband and wife, instead of taking one another to court, we should tell our shepherds and pastor and let them be the mediators. The reason why people take their brothers and sisters (or anyone) to court is because they don’t want to lose their benefits. The Bible teaches us that it’s okay for us to lose.
What is the purpose of the law? The first five books of the Bible are books of the law. The purpose of the law is to protect the poor and the weak. However, in our society that is not the case. The weak and the poor cannot hire lawyers, but the rich and strong can. This way, they bring one another to court to strengthen their advantages and benefits.

Part 2: Verses 9-11: Who could inherit the kingdom of God?
The list of those who will not inherit the kingdom of God extended to sexually immoral, idolaters, adulterers, men who practice homosexuality, thieves, greedy, drunkards, revilers, and swindlers.
We used to be sinful like this but when we repent, we are now washed, sanctified and justified in Christ Jesus and we receive a new identity in Christ. So now we can inherit the kingdom of God. The main point here is not to condemn but to urge them to live a new life according to their new identity in Christ.

Part 3: Verses 12-20: Glorify God in your body
People in the Corinthians church thought that whatever they did to their body (not affect their heart and spirit) then they would be fine and everything would be lawful to them. This is not true. What we do in our body could affect our relationship with God because our body belongs to God, we should not do anything unholy or wrong to our body. Our body is God’s temple.

How to glorify God in our body?

  • Admit our sins: People in the Corinthians church did not want to admit their wrongdoing. When we do something wrong, we need to say sorry and not make excuses or try to justify the reason.

  • Understand sexual sin can break our relationship and unity with God and others: We should flee from sexual immorality.

  • Husband and wife: do not cheat

  • People who are dating or single: don’t spend overnight just the two of you

  • Actively glorify God in our body: we should not do harmful things to our body (self-harm), clean the church with a joyful heart, do the dishes, pick up the trash, etc.

Reflection Question: What is your takeaway from the message?
